One of the ways obesity is measured in the medical field today is by using a mathematical formula called a Body Mass Index, also known as BMI. A person’s BMI is a measure of their body fat based on their height and weight. BMI can be determined by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and then multiplying by 705. For example, a woman who is 5’6″ and weighs 190 would have a BMI of 31.
Having a high BMI should be taken very seriously and can be a matter of life and death. Patients with a high BMI typically are at high risk of having obesity-related health issues also known as co-morbidities. These health issues can be things such as mild to severe joint pain, back pain, hypertension, sleep apnea, diabetes, depression and more.
If your BMI places you in the category of obese or morbidly obese (or even on the high end of overweight) you may be a candidate for the Lap-Band® procedure and other surgical weight loss options. In some instances insurance may even cover the surgery.
